Recorded in Apollo Bay under the guidance of the ever-present Mikey Young, Melbourne, Florida marks the third full-length release from the Melbourne-based quartet, Dick Diver. Following the well-received New Start Again (2011) and Calendar Days (2013), both of which garnered acclaim in year-end rankings, this album demonstrates a captivating evolution in their sound. It’s a diverse offering, simultaneously smoother and quirkier than their previous efforts.

There’s a touch of the unexpected here, with the inclusion of a horn section, a synth ballad reminiscent of Tears For Fears (in “Percentage Points”), and even a song co-authored with a distinguished poet.The album’s lead single, “Waste The Alphabet,” penned by guitarist Al McKay in collaboration with the renowned Australian poet Michael Farrell, burst onto the scene in December, creating a buzz that spread rapidly across the internet. Melbourne, Florida showcases Dick Diver’s exploration of a broader Australian sound while maintaining a firm connection to their musical influences (think Go-Betweens, Television, Flying Nun bands, and more).
