Released in 1977, “Exorcist II: The Heretic” was directed by John Boorman (“Point Blank”, “Hell in the Pacific”, “Deliverance” and “Zardoz”). The film is set four years after the original and it centres on the now 16-year-old Regan MacNeil, who is still recovering from her previous demonic possession. At the centre of the film is Morricone’s soundtrack. By mixing tribal and liturgical music, he achieves a soundtrack that’s equal parts terrifying and intriguing.

In one of his first forays into big-budget Hollywood, Ennio Morricone produced one of his weirdest, eeriest and most enticing scores. Morricone covers all grounds on this release – everything from the beautiful to the absolutely demented, and all while still playing within the same sandbox. Once you get to the deranged Satanic prog-rock of “Magic And Ecstasy,” it hits you: this is the craziest we’ve ever heard Morricone. And it’s amazing.
