Leigh Whannell’s “Upgrade” is an incredibly fun & inventive sci-fi action thriller, and one of Mondo’s favourite films from 2018. “Upgrade” is set in the near-future, where technology controls nearly all aspects of life. When the world of protagonist Grey Trace, a self-labeled technophobe, is turned upside down, his only hope for revenge is an experimental computer chip implant.

Jed Palmer’s incredible score to “Upgrade” manages to be be moody, intricate, beautiful, and brutal, all at the same time. Its quieter moments feature echoes of Blade Runner and Tangerine Dream, and it is as comfortable being melancholic as it is being punishing and industrial in its more action orientated cues. A stone cold classic.
