Visual Crime by Jerry Moriarty Hardcover Book
Told in a series of bizarre short stories, Visual Crime chronicles painter Rotart Sulli’s professional life illustrating crime fiction for Visual Crime Magazine. In the first story Sulli is given his first freelance assignment but told that he has to create his drawings in a secret studio in the basement of the Ace Hotel. Little did he anticipate that he’d have to stop a malevolent janitor from throwing his work into the hotel’s incinerator! In the second story, Sulli is once again hired by the magazine; and once again, the job comes with unusual instructions: he’s told to place the finished work in his apartment window – “it will be seen” . Sandwiched between these two episodes are the fruits of Sulli’s labours – atmospheric, painted illustrations accompanied by the brief noirish narratives they illustrate.
In this audacious experimental graphic novel, self-described “paintoonist” (painter + cartoonist) Jerry Moriaty alternates luminous, Hopperesque paintings with rough-hewn pen and ink panels, literally painting a portrait of the artist working alone in a mysterious and uncertain world.
